Kongolo Visits Big Chant Winners

The winners of the Big Chant 2018 were surprised by a visit from Town’s Terence Kongolo on Friday 4 May 2018.

The defender visited pupils at Hepworth Junior and Infant School, who won the competition for their chant about Town striker Steve Mounié.

Terence also handed out clappers with the winning chant on, and presented Years 5 and 6 with a signed ball.

Over 2300 pupils from more than 50 different schools across Kirklees took part in the competition which was run in partnership with Musica Kirklees.

The aim of the project was to engage children in creative composition using Huddersfield Town and chants from the stands to help shape their work. There were winners in each KS2 year group as well as the overall winner, Hepworth.

Nick Dolling Assistant Principal of Musica Kirklees said:

“Musica Kirklees would like to congratulate all the winners of the Big Chant and express it’s sincere thanks to Katie and her team at the Town Foundation as well as the players and staff at Huddersfield Town for supporting this composition initiative.”

As well as the visit from Terence, Hepworth were invited to perform their chant pitch side at the John Smith’s Stadium when Town played Watford on 14 April 2018.

Katie Suttron, Head of Education at the Town Foundation, said: “It was great to see Terence visit the winners of the Big Chant 2018 and congratulate them on their success.

“It was a fantastic competition which gave pupils the chance to combine football and music, and they created some excellent chants!

“Well done to all the pupils who took part and special congratulations to Hepworth Junior and Infant School for their winning composition.”

Mark Crouch, Headteacher at Hepworth Junior and Infant School commented:

“This was a fantastic competition that immediately inspired the pupils at Hepworth. We took on the Big Chant challenge in music lessons and created a song that we loved – it stuck in our heads!

“The prize was amazing! We had a great day out at the Watford game where the children got to do a lap of honour and then sing on the pitch.

“The whole school was really excited about the player and trophy visit. They brought in tops and photos to be signed and cameras to take photos. Most of the school were in Town kits.

“We have a big Huddersfield Town following at Hepworth. Almost half our children now take part in their after school club. The Club has inspired our school with this prize and created a real buzz of excitement that the children involved will always remember.

“We’d like to thank the Town Foundation for this opportunity.”
