The overarching aim of Active Ability is to help people with disabilities to become more active, independent and involved in their wider community, and ultimately enjoy the power of sport.
Active Ability is our sport and physical activity offer for children and adults with disabilities. The programme is made up of four main elements:
In addition to these community focussed sessions, we also facilitate activity within a number of residential and day centres in Kirklees.
All of our programmes provide a competitive element with the opportunity to compete in fixtures. We have teams who play as part of the Ability Counts League, Premier League BT national and interclub competitions.
Through School Sports we can provide a variety of offers, which include national curriculum physical education lessons for people with a disability attending special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) schools, and social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) and mainstream schools with resourced units.
We also offer after-school clubs; multi-sport lessons; collapsed curriculum days and provide our Premier League Primary Stars programme to SEND, SEMH and mainstream school resourced units. For information about our Premier League Primary Stars offer, please visit our Education pages.
Through Active Ability we have developed a disability awareness programme that educates primary and secondary school pupils on the topics of disability and inclusion. The programme involves both practical and theory-based learning, which can be adapted to suit the requirement of each school.
We also organise and deliver the annual Flame Celebration Event on behalf of sport and activity providers in Kirklees as a way of promoting awareness and encouraging the development of disability and inclusive activity throughout Kirklees.
