Huddersfield Town Foundation has collaborated with Reinwood Junior School to raise awareness of Black History Month.
Huddersfield Town Foundation Community Coach Christina Cawtheray helped deliver a workshop to Reinwood's year five pupils, designed to encourage thought-provoking discussions among pupils about its significance.
The workshops, which focused on the theme of Standing Firm in Power and Pride, explored the importance and background of Black History Month, as well as the American Civil Rights Movement and the struggle for social justice and equality.
Christina Cawtheray said: “The main focus was how children as young as seven spread the message of social justice with peaceful protests. They saw and heard how they led sit-ins and how they changed people’s mindsets.
“It also proved that children as young as them can make a difference.”
Christina added: “I was extremely impressed with the discussions and explanations the children gave during the workshops. They were, quite simply, fantastic.”
Reinwood Junior School Teacher Bev Coates said: “I thought the workshop was great. It was really nice to allow the children discussion time and some children that don't normally contribute were engaging in the tasks.
"It was a thought provoking discussion and concluding statement - that they can make a difference if they try.”
Huddersfield Town Foundation has a rich history of supporting primary and high schools within the region, through teaching and mentoring as well as improving the health and wellbeing of children through physical education.
